Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living (SIL) can assist you in developing more independence in your daily life.

Our tranquil, Somerville properties are now available for short term and long-term stays, allowing you to live independently in a shared living arrangement close to major shops and amenities, beaches, nature reserves and picnic spots.

Who is SIL for?

Maybe you’ve been living with family, or on your own, but you desire more autonomy and socialisation opportunities.

Or, maybe you’ve been living without assistance but need more support to achieve your daily living goals.

SIL provides the right support alongside support workers and housemates to curate a healthy, active lifestyle and learn essential new skills.

FAQs

How do you ensure housemate compatibility?

Before we suggest any SIL homes, we’ll get to know more about you (including your individual goals and needs, your hobbies and interests, your gender and age, and where your friends and family are living).

With this information, we’ll be able to assess whether we have any suitable homes, with housemates you’ll enjoy living with. And if the answer is yes, we can set up a time to show you the home, and even meet your housemates before you decide on moving in.

What’s the process for finding a Supported Independent Living home?

To move into a SIL home, the first step is to contact Elaine (elaine@trueability.com.au) to discuss your needs and what you’re looking for in a SIL arrangement.

Am I eligible for Supported Independent Living?

Having an NDIS Plan is a required pre-requisite to accessing True Ability supports and services, including SIL.

What if I’m already receiving supports from True Ability or other providers?

You can still apply for SIL, but we encourage you to discuss this with your Support Coordinator or a trusted family member to ensure you’re maximising the supports in your plan.

What’s the difference between SIL, SDA and Respite Care?

SIL funding covers the cost of independent living supports (e.g. support workers), whereas SDA funding covers the cost of the accommodation itself (e.g. home modifications). Respite funding covers short terms stays and is more flexible.
